Straight answers to the questions students ask most about the postgraduate application process — tests, documents, deadlines and rounds.
Do I need the GRE or GMAT?
It depends on the programme. Many Master's programmes are flexible or test-optional, while most MBAs and quantitative programmes still value a strong GMAT or GRE. Always check each programme's current policy — they change year to year.
Which English test should I take — IELTS or TOEFL?
Most universities accept both IELTS and TOEFL, and increasingly the Duolingo English Test. Choose based on which format suits you and which your target universities accept. Confirm the minimum score each programme requires.
How many universities should I apply to?
A balanced list of six to ten is common — a mix of ambitious, target and safe options. Quality matters more than quantity: each application should be tailored, not copied.
What documents do I need?
Typically: academic transcripts, degree certificates, a statement of purpose or personal statement, a CV/resume, letters of recommendation, test scores, and a passport. Some programmes add essays, portfolios or interviews.
How important are recommendation letters?
Very. Strong, specific letters from people who know your work well carry more weight than a famous name who can only speak in generalities. Approach recommenders early and brief them well.
What are application rounds and do they matter?
Many programmes — especially MBAs — accept applications in rounds. Earlier rounds usually have more seats and funding available, so applying early is generally an advantage if your application is ready.
Can I apply while I'm still completing my degree?
Yes. Most applicants apply in their final year using predicted or in-progress results, then submit final transcripts once available. Offers are often conditional on your final grades.
What if my grades aren't perfect?
Grades matter, but they're one part of a holistic review. A compelling narrative, relevant experience, strong tests and excellent essays can offset a lower GPA — this is exactly where strategy makes a difference.
